O'Neil Richards is a Jamaican reggae singer, songwriter, and storyteller. Blending a passion for narrative songwriting with root-level musical arrangements, Richards has established a distinct voice focused on uplifting and positive themes.
Richards discovered his creative inclinations while growing up in the parish of Saint Mary, Jamaica. Surrounded by the country's rich oral and musical traditions, he developed a profound penchant for storytelling, pulling his primary inspiration directly from everyday life. During his youth, his artistic worldview was heavily shaped by iconic reggae foundational figures, including Beres Hammond, Garnet Silk, Buju Banton, and Tony Rebel.
Upon hitting puberty, Richards relocated to Kingston, where his storytelling and theatrical capabilities flourished. While attending Papine High School, he wrote and directed a classroom production in grade eight, securing his first top academic marks and cementing his drive to write and perform.
Despite his early creative success, Richards initially pursued a practical career path after high school, certifying as a professional cosmetologist. He established his own beauty salon and proved highly successful in the industry, winning the prestigious Caribbean Hairdressing competition twice. However, his underlying pull toward musical and theatrical expression never waned.
As a recording artist, Richards operates under his own name to deliver smooth, message-driven roots reggae and lovers rock. His music is characterized by positive, conscious lyricism, structured around themes of perseverance, social commentary, and spiritual uprightness.
Richards' discography highlights his emphasis on high-quality production and narrative-driven tracks.
I Shall Stand
His definitive studio album, emphasizing resilience and faith in the face of constant threats of death and destruction from a centuries old enemy.
Sweat of Yuh Brow
A widely praised single exploring working-class struggles, highlighting the importance of honest labor and dedication.
Graduation Gown
A poignant narrative track reflecting on milestones, false dreams packaged and sold to the youth. Ego and hype replacing reason and responsibilities.
Victims & Perpetrators
A socio-politically conscious track.
Richards continues to write, record, and distribute independent reggae music, dedicated to his original mission of utilizing music as a pure vehicle for storytelling and spiritual upliftment. Be on the lookout for his latest studio album "ERASURE", slated for release September 4, 2027 with the title track of the same name dropping December 11, 2026.
